Get Your Plumbing Ready for the Winter

Marietta, GA isn’t exactly a frozen tundra, and our winters tend to be much milder than they get further north. But cold weather and other issues can still affect your plumbing, and if you plan to be away from your home this holiday season, you need to prepare your system to prevent any problems from forming. No one wants to come home to find stagnant water from a leak all over their bathroom floor, or even frozen pipes which can create bursts and cause serious damage. The more you can get your plumbing ready for the winter, the more readily you can put a stop to such problems. Here’s a quick list of steps you should take to help make that happen.

1. DRAIN OUTDOOR PIPES

Outdoor pipes and faucets are the most vulnerable to freezes and the problems that they accompany. If you haven’t don so already, turn the water off to any outdoor outlets (shut the water off for the whole house if you don’t have the means to shut off the water to one particular outlet), then open the faucets and let the water drain from all of the pipes. Coil hoses and other equipment and store them in the garage of somewhere else, then shut off the outdoor faucets and restore the water. That will keep the pipes safe during the winter.

2. WINTERIZE INDOOR PLUMBING

Indoor plumbing is less vulnerable to freezes, but it pays to properly winterize them. If you haven’t done so already, schedule a maintenance session with a trained plumber who can look for leaks, check for underinsulated pipes and the like. With that knowledge in place, you can identify places where you can insulate at-risk parts of your plumbing, seal any leaks, and take care of any other potential trouble before it disrupts your home.
