Drain Your Water Heater Every 2-3 Months

Plumbing needs periodic attention just like every other component of your Austell, GA home. The water heater, in particular, requires mindful attention, since it does its job in quiet corners of the home, and rarely causes a fuss until the problems are all but insurmountable. A water heater maintenance session is a good place to start, as a plumber arrives once or twice a year to give it a once-over and ensure that it’s operating as efficiently as possible. You can add to this by draining the water heater and flushing out the tank every 2-3 months. It’s an easy operation, which you can perform using only a length of hose and access to a drain pipe (or even just a bucket large enough to hold the water in the tank).

  • Turn off the gas or electrical power to the water heater, then just off the water supply.
  • Attach one end of the hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and the other end either to a drain pipe or to a bucket large enough to hold the water in the tank.
  • Open the pressure relief valve at the top of the tank. This will start the water flowing out of the tank.
  • When the water is about three-quarters drain, turn on the main water line to the tank. The fresh water will flush out the sediment at the bottom of the tank, which is the ultimate purpose of the exercise.
  • Once the sediment is flushed out, close the pressure relief valve, then close the drain valve and detach the hose. Allow the tank to fill up.
  • Clean up any spilled water, then turn on the heat source again to warm up the water.
